Solid Cactus Culture

Posted by John Dawe on Mar 22, 2009

Back in December, I put together a “Cactus Culture” survey based on the famed Zappos Culture Book.   I then saw this commercial on TV for Chili’s and thought, “You know, musical chairs is the type of thing we would just spontaneously do at Solid Cactus.”
Here are two “Culture” Survey responses that support this thought:

Paper, Ink, Scissors, Sales

Posted by John Dawe on Jan 1, 2009

As my good friend Catherine Shafer at cds creative, inc. likes to say, “You never put all investment into one marketing channel — and Web/E-mail/etc. Counts as ONE Channel!”
Catherine is right.  As part of my ventures into e-commerce outside of Solid Cactus, I manage e-commerce for a Better than Godiva, Gourmet Chocolate Shop called Ah! [...]

Snow…? S’no problem for Solid Cactus Staff!

Posted by John Dawe on Dec 19, 2008

Ok, so it’s no secret around Solid Cactus that I’m no fan of snow…  It’s snowing in Northeastern Pennsylvania today and boy is it coming down out there!  But part of being Solid Cactus is realizing that our customers aren’t all from the Northeast… In fact our customers are in Florida, Texas, California, and other [...]

The Power of Customer Service Crappiness

Posted by John Dawe on Dec 5, 2008

It’s happened twice in the last week so, of course I have to blog about it.

Director of Corporate Marketing Greg Davis and I had been pulling our hair out for three hours over a problem with how an e-mail blast we sent today to our customers was ‘breaking’ in Microsoft Outlook 2007.  Turns out it’s not our fault (no really it’s not… well, at least not totally).   Maybe a little.

Customer Service Nun

Posted by John Dawe on Nov 6, 2008

So, on Halloween Day last week I headed in to Office Max early to pick up some envelopes for a direct mailing I’m doing and went to check out.   I was greeted by at the customer service desk by a woman dressed as a nun.   I said to myself, “Self… what a great idea…. put [...]

The “R” Word

Posted by John Dawe on Oct 21, 2008

Meg Mitchell Moore over at “Deliver Magazine” (Subscribe) writes the following on “The ‘R’ Word” - a great article on the current economic recession and marketing.
In businesses, as in households, the response to an economic downturn is often a corresponding tightening of the belt: fewer lattes for Mom and Dad, fewer splashy ad campaigns for [...]

Get Political

Posted by John Dawe on Oct 10, 2008

Take a look at any campaign for public office and you’ll see a marketing plan that (usually) works — the details change — but the fundamentals don’t.   Do your “campaigns” have this kind of consistency? If not, take a good look at how to get them to this point.
Stage One
